The 5 Most Common PC Errors and Problems

We’ve all bought a new pc, brought it home, hooked it up, and began surfing the net and creating documents. It’s fun and easy. As you surf the net, though, you computer will gain cookies. No, they aren’t of the chocolate chip variety, there a bit different than that. Cookies track where you’ve been, and in some cases, help your computer to load sites more quickly. The problem is, though, that if you don’t clear your cookies on a regular basis, they could really slow your machine down.

Common Error #1 – Spyware | Adware | Viruses

If you surf the net unprotected, you are also vulnerable to common PC problems like spyware, adware, or even horrible viruses. All these things can clog up your PC and really slow it down, causing some of the most common PC problems. A serious virus can cause system errors and crashes. If you do a lot of Internet surfing, make sure you use protection, which will help you avoid many of the common PC problems out there today. Find yourself a good anti-virus program, or your system can become brutally infected with all sorts of nasty things.

Common Error #2 –  Fragmented Hard Drive

Even though spyware and adware are two of the most common PC problems that can really slow your computer down, so can extended use. Over time, your hard disk can get errors and become fragmented. This is one of the more common PC problems, and as such, an incredibly easy thing to fix. What you have to do is go into ‘My Computer’ and right click on your main drive (usually C:/). On the drop down menu, click on ‘Properties’. At the top of the next window, you will see a few tabs. You want to click on the ‘Tools’ tab. There you will see a disk defragmenter as well as an error checking function.

You want to do both of these (and fairly regularly) to avoid these common PC problems. Make sure you have no programs running in the background, and start by doing an error check first. This will take a while, so go out and do some errands while you’re waiting. When that is finished, do a disk defrag. This will clear up any unused files and help keep your PC running smoothly, thus avoiding these common PC problems.

Common Error #3 – Your Monitor

If you boot up your computer, and your monitor is blank, you could have one of a couple of common PC problems. First, check to make sure that the power cords are properly plugged in. If the cord is plugged in, and there is still nothing, then there could be an issue with the monitor itself or with Windows.

To determine if this common PC problem is a monitor issue, then get another monitor, or borrow one from a friend, and plug it in. If it is still black, then it is Windows. In that case, you will have to re-install windows, which is best done by a professional if you’re a bit new to the world of computers.

Common Error #4 – The Blue Screen of Death

Another one of the many common PC problems is the “blue screen of death.” We have all gotten it at least once. This is usually a random access memory (RAM) problem. RAM is what your computer uses as sort of an overflow when your processor and hard disk are running at maximum capacity. If you have a lot of RAM, usually your PC runs very smoothly.

To get more RAM, take your tower to a professional and have them pick out some new chips to fit where the old ones were. Programs are using more RAM these days, so make sure you buy as much as your motherboard can handle. RAM is usually pretty inexpensive, and adding some to your machine will fix many of the common PC problems people encounter.

Common Error #5 – PC Security

One of the most common PC problems everywhere is security. Security will keep your PC free of viruses, spam, and hackers. Viruses and hackers can slow down your computer and even mess up some of the software Windows requires to run correctly. Hackers maliciously enter your system and change settings or delete files that can cause your PC to crash or not run at all. If your computer is not secured, prevent these common PC problems by getting a firewall. Be sure to use the highest bit encryption on your wireless network, and buy an anti-virus program for an extra layer of security.

There are many common PC problems. Some are more serious than others. Always remember to keep yourself protected. Do a defragment and error check on your hard disk fairly regularly. If you have an anti-virus program, make sure you do a scan once a week so it can catch any possible viruses. Avoid common PC problems, and you’ll have a much better computing experience every time you turn on the machine.
