What is Windows 10?

Windows 10 is the new desktop PC operating system developed by Microsoft. It is a part of the Windows NT family. Windows 10 was officially unveiled in September 2014 and released to the public on 29 July 2015. It is available as a free upgrade right now, but not for long. Microsoft plans to send further upgrades or updates automatically through the internet.

What’s So Special About Windows 10?

Windows 10 is considered by many to be the greatest Windows OS released by Microsoft ever, and that is a big thing to say. Windows 10 improves the performance on many PCs. It takes up less space on the hard drive than the previous versions of Windows, including the much admired Windows 7, offers much quicker boot time and impressive battery life for your laptop.

Windows 10 comes with a number of new features such as a new way of handling memory. It compresses the contents of memory to make more space in the hard drive without slowing the system down and allocates memory to the new application when needed.

Windows 10 offers excellent gaming performance and supports DirectX 12. Because of this new operating system, even your existing PC can deliver better gaming performance. You can now stream games from Xbox to your PC and capture snapshots of the gameplay, to be shared later on Facebook.

The Start Screen on Windows 10 is much improved from Windows 8. Now you have more tools in File Explorer and Task Manager. There are simple refresh and reset tools which make it much easier to fix your computer.

The settings can now be synched automatically to other PCs on which you have the same Microsoft account. If you have the new Intel RealSense camera on your laptop, Windows 10 even offers face s recognition feature to go with it.

Passport is another impressive feature, which makes it easier and more secure to logon to the system. But it is still a work in progress. Cortana, the voice assistant from Windows Phone is now available with Windows 10. It powers search on the new operating system, finds programs and files with ease.

Windows 10 comes with a number of free Office apps, but you won’t get the full version of Office for free on it. That has to be bought. There’s a new browser called the “Edge” – it is pretty impressive and almost as good as Chrome, except that it has no extension support and no ad blocking.

Is Windows 10 The Final Windows Version?

Yes, Windows 10 is the last and final Windows operating system. At least that’s what Microsoft claims. There will never be another version of Windows ever again. Of course, there will be changes and upgrades, but they will be sent to you directly as Windows Updates.

Windows 10 is referred to as “Windows As A Service”, which means it can change over time and keep improving. Microsoft wants Windows 10 to be the most dominant operating system in the world and there is no reason why they cannot succeed at this.

When Does The Free Upgrade Period End?

Windows 10 will stop being a free update on 29 July 2016, exactly a year after its initial release. Once the free upgrade is no longer available, Windows 10 Home will cost £99.99 and the Windows 10 Pro version will cost £189.99.

If you have Windows 7 or Windows 8 on your PC, you can upgrade to the new Windows 10 by using the Windows 10 product key.
